Best Resume Format in 2026: Chronological, Functional or Hybrid?
"Format" means two things: the structure (what goes where) and the visual layout. Get the structure right first — it matters more — then choose a design that makes it easy to read.
Reverse-chronological (best for most people)
Your experience appears with the most recent role first, each with dates and achievements. Recruiters and applicant tracking systems both handle it best because it answers their first question — what are you doing now, and what did you do before? — immediately.
Use it if you have steady experience in the field you're applying to.
Functional (use with care)
A functional resume groups your skills into themes and gives employment history only a short list, or none. It can play down gaps or an unrelated past, but many recruiters distrust it for exactly that reason, and ATS software often struggles to connect skills to jobs.
Hybrid or combination (career changers, varied careers)
Start with a strong summary and a skills section that maps to the new role, then follow with reverse-chronological experience. It lets you lead with transferable skills without hiding your history — a better choice than functional for most career changers.
Layout: one column or two?
For online applications, one column is the safe default. Two-column layouts look striking and fit more on a page, which makes them great for emailing directly or for interviews, but some ATS software reads across columns and scrambles them.

Frequently asked questions
Which resume format do recruiters prefer?
Reverse-chronological. It is the most familiar format and the easiest to scan quickly.
Is a functional resume good for career gaps?
A hybrid format usually works better: lead with skills and a summary, keep dated experience, and explain a long gap in one honest line if needed.
